That's a great article, Dave. Placing the emphasis solely on individual lifestyle changes only reinforces assumptions that we can simply "green" our way out of the current predicament without the equally necessary (but much more difficult) examinati…

Keep up the good work. After writing my response I picked up my Orion magazine (recommended if you aren't already a subscriber) and read this article. Thought is was quite pertinent to this discussion. I agree with him on most levels...think abo…

Hi Alison and Dave, Thanks for your replies and your insights. I really appreciate how the notion of "shalom" seems to resonate with both of you and how it appears to inform your understanding and actions as Christians in these areas. Over the past…

I'm currently volunteering with a group affliated with 350. Our goal is to get as many Canadians as possible on parliment hill on October 24 to let the government know we are concerned with climate change and that we want them to take possitive acti…

Hi Brian - I can relate to the bit of uneasiness to the single-issue approach that often surrounds the climate change debate. There has been an effort on the "change" side to broaden that approach....but as a whole they haven't gotten too far beyond…

Profile Information

Location:
St. George, Ontario
Church/School/Organization:
Calvary Christian Reformed Church
Justice issues I'm interested in:
Sustainability and Globalization.
The far-reaching social and environmental impacts of affluent lifestyles has particularly captured my attention. Western society's unquestioned pursuit of greater material prosperity, production efficiency (something I've been closely involved with in the industrial automation industry), and low-prices has had dramatic effects on our environment, our local communities, as well as that of so-called "under-developed" nations. As a Christian, I am particularly interested in the role that churches might play in fostering more sustainable lifestyles and provisioning systems and will be examining these areas in more detail as part of my thesis research.
About me:
I am currently a student in the University of Waterloo's Environment and Resource Studies program (Ontario, Canada). After working for ten years as a control/software systems engineer in industrial automation, I am pursuing interests in the broad area of sustainability (sustainable production and consumption, sustainable livelihoods, and sustainable and resilient systems of provision).
