Thank you all for your effort in this. You are hearing the cries, so to speak, and you are making an effort to transmit those cries, so that others can hear. There needs to somehow be a sudden surge of urgency on this every day until we see aid p...

I've been having a hard time figuring out how to articulate a response to this post, Chuck, and I guess the only response I have is to ask the Spirit to add my heart cries to the louder cries he is hearing day and night in Darfur and beyond. I thi...

Thanks for the Darfur reminder. It's disturbing because it's not alarmist. I will also be checking the resources and contacting my elected officials.

I forgot to ask about people at Kibbie interested in being on the We Care board. I'm thinking maybe Chris Baner could suggest someone (I've been gone long enough that I go back to church and don't know half of the people there). Maybe Ted or Mary DeRose or Gail Patterson, but they're all pretty busy already with other obligations.

Did you want to get coffee sometime? I'm in town until the end of the month and enjoy frequenting Cafe Julia's!

That's great that the TTV sale went so well!...Although, I'm really sad that it won't be happening again for awhile.

I recognized you too at the sale, but at first couldn't figure out where from. It is a small world (all roads must lead to South Haven, I guess--or maybe they just start here). Are you still living in South Haven, or are you just in and out with school and all?

oops...I just saw this comment now! I obviously am back in the States (it was good meeting you the other day), and would enjoy having coffee or something. I'm in South Haven all of December. I'm sorry I missed the Ten Thousand Villages thing (there was a Ten Thousand Villages store in Little Rock when I lived there)...is there any chance that you'll be doing it again sometime soon?

Hey, Chuck. I'm sure we've been at some of the same events before, but it was good to actually meet you on Sunday. I'm interested to hear your impression of the c2c event. The photos are unfortunately not mine. CRWRC did a fact finding trip before we began our Sudan response in 04 and then another in 07/08 to reassess at the end of significant relief phases. The photos are from that last trip with our consortium partners in Sudan. They are of the Western/Chad border camps where CRWRC works.

Nice area...out near the power plant! Have you ever gone sledding down the State Park dunes? It's one of the most wonderful things to do in South Haven in the winter!

Well, enjoy the seminary experience. I was going to say, hey, Sharon Bemis has SH connections, but it looks like you already new that!

Hey, I can't think of anyone off of the top of my head, but I'll definitely mention it! I'd consider it myself since my internship in Romania is ending in November, but I'm not planning on staying in South Haven. Where exactly is your house? And how big is it?

Hi Chuck - how exciting! Are you starting at Western? Calvin? I'll work my South Haven grapevine about the room. What are you planning to study or aren't you sure yet?

You could surely tie into their interest in global mission. They have a CRWRC intern from their church posted to Romania, and I know she's on justiceseekers - Sharon Bemis.

Hey, good to meet you here. I'm glad you are a person who is both passionate about justice and planning on seminary. I went to Calvin Sem for a couple years, then did a two year urban internship. Didn't go back and finish sem though. Now it's a whole lot of years later, and I've spent most of my life working for the CRC in one way and another. I wonder if you know the CRC congregation in Kibby? Friend of mine is the pastor there.

About me:
Currently, I am a member of First United Methodist Church in South Haven. I was raised in the CRC tradition in rural Ottawa County, MI. I have just finished a satisfying 8 year career as a public school teacher. I began full-time studies in the MDiv program at Western Theological Seminary (Holland) in the fall of 2008.

My life revolves around social justice. I began and operate a fair trade coffee and tea program at my church, with a Ten Thousand Villages Festival Sale also planned for this coming holiday shopping season.

I was a coordinator of Save Darfur Grand Rapids and now volunteer as a coordinator with the Michigan Darfur Coalition. I am available to assist congregations and student organizations in a variety of ways to assist with their Darfur advocacy efforts. I have been an exhibitor for events ranging from Bethany Christian Services' Global Day for Darfur to the World Symposium of Ophthamolgists. I have also been an invited speaker at schools (jr/sr and collegiate), etc. I have materials to assist in your efforts.

The Cries Grow Louder

I was on a conference call for an hour and a half this afternoon. It was intense. I paced back and forth in the living room for a good portion of it. I haven't fully calmed down from it.

Darfur leaders and activist leaders are trying to figure out what to do. Sudan is kicking entire aid agencies out of the refugee camps. Some aid workers have been kidnapped this week. As if it weren't bad enough, now over 1 million people are left to wither away slowly.

One of the leaders on our call was a man… Continue

Thinking about social justice this Thanksgiving Day

A Thanksgiving Journal

What I am thankful for? A lot of the traditional answers come to mind. I am thankful for my family; truly my family is doing better than ever. I am also thankful that I have a warm home and more food than I need. I have clothing and freedom, true friends and reliable transportation.

Over the years though, my perspective about how to think about this day has changed. At some point I confessed my selfishness, and over time my eyes have been able to see beyond my own needs… Continue

Learning the Bible. (Part I?)

(Note: This particular post does not have a justice theme. However, I hope to take this into the realm of studying Social Justice from a scriptural standpoint. I am a brand new Seminary student this year. For this particular post, I just wonder your reactions, and I especially wonder if anyone can relate. If you can't relate, then perhaps you can share how you learn the Bible?)

The Bible is a big book. I used to doubt the possibility of reading it from cover to cover. I heard a beautiful story… Continue

Go To The Store... Spend $5... Prevent a Rape in Darfur...

Hi Friends,

I have met a lot of people who used to live in Sudan, and I have met a lot of people who have worked in refugee camps near the Sudan border. Rape is happening outside of these camps RIGHT NOW. Witnesses have told me personal stories about these rapes, which are so brutal, that sometimes the women do not survive their injuries.

You may ask, 'So, why are women leaving the relative safety of the camps?'

Residents in the camp are responsible for cooking their own food for themselves… Continue
