Kathy: Our church has an industrial dishwasher - it's fantastic! A load takes 5 minutes, maximum. We also use it on Sunday to wash the cups after the coffee fellowship. I think we were able to get it used - you might be able to ask around at a foo...

- I am the Northern B.C. rep for A Rocha Canada - Christians in Conservation and also work on the Eco-congregation program helping churches and communities become intentional about making creation care an integral part of their ministries.

How then should I live?

Conservation and Poverty...this is what it's all about
This video http://www.assets-kenya.org/ (click on ASSETS - A Story of Hope) shows what A Rocha Kenya and the ASSETS program there is doing. I know I work for the organization so I'm a bit biased but to me the Kenyans have hit on something really really valuable. I hope it inspires you. It also makes me wonder how we can create this kind of impact in a North American context. But then again there are different issues here. Our trip to Uganda
I'm not sure why I feel like I need to post this for the whole world to see but here goes. As we are in the final month of preparation for our trip to Uganda I can't get over the fear that is within me. We are leaving our three children in the capable hands of their grandparents but what if we don't come back...from what I can tell we will be the only white people for miles. In September you left a question for me on my page. I am sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I was not aware that I had a page where poeple could comment! You asked if the Houston CRC had Asset BasedCommunity Development training. I am not aware that they do, however there are many of us throughout the country that do these trainings for churches. Where are you located?

- Thanks for the writing compliment - it is something I enjoy doing. I actually write a regular column for my church's newletter call "To Care and To Keep" mostly focused on creation care-type issues. It has been well received and very refreshing to see the church's reaction - very supportive and open to the ideas. A definite blessing.
I was actually wondering what sort of role you had with the folks in Surrey. You are way up north, huh? Do you ever get down to the field centre? It is a great place.
If you get this before Sunday morning - keep me in mind. We are doing an A Rocha informational meeting to prepare the church for a possible staff position splitting with A Rocha USA. Pretty exciting. It might be a similar type of position as you do - though I don't know the details of what you are doing. Would like to talk to you more about it someday.

Ida Kaastra Mutoigo said… - Hi Cindy! Yes, it is exciting to hear that you are going to Uganda. If you have enough time, I would highly encourage you to see CRWRC's work in Uganda through its partnership with churches there. If you are interested, please contact our staff ahead of time so something can be arranged. The email address for Davis Omanyo (our East Africa team leader) is: d.omanyo@crwrcuganda.org and the email address for Jim Zylstra (our Country Consultant) is j.zylstra@crwrcuganda.org . There is an aspect of sustainability and justice that is hugely important to us in terms of "who owns the development process" and ministry that happens. Whenever there is one individual, family or just a few individuals who are taking most or all the responsibility for the development programs or ministry going on in communities, there is a high risk (for eg. I know that the death of a Kenyan woman who started an orphanage led to the death of her ministry to these orphans because everyone was only supporting and interacting with her vision) compared to having a church or congregation taking full ownership of the program and then committed to the community beyond the life span of any one individual. If your church in Houston would like to consider partnerships with CRWRC and one of the communities or churches we work with overseas, please contact Crystle Numan at numanc@crcna.ca for information. It could be a really great way to build sustainable partnerships for development.
