Thanks for the post Karl. I studied a little of Wilson in undergrad at Trinity Christian College, since I was a Sociology major and lived so close to Chicago, he came up in a number of my classes. I know his book "The Truly Disadvantaged" was sim...

More Than Just Race

I just read a review in the Int'l Herald Trib of 3/12 about a book called More Than Just Race - Being Black and Poor in the Inner City, by Wm Julius Wilson. Has anyone read this? What should America be doing about what this review calls "isolated and impoverished black ghettos"?
Of course the prescription depends on the diagnosis - is the problem caused by attitudes and behaviors of the poor themselves? Or, are there systemic and institutional patterns and policies and practices that lie at the… Continue

Justice in Genesis - God's breath.

A little justice group is forming to meet on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Hope Reformed.... last night Dr. Tom Boogaart from Western Sem spoke to us about justice in Genesis. Justice actions are sacramental actions, he said. He suggested that as bread and wine are "signs" that point us beyond themselves to Jesus, so also acting justly is a sign that points beyond itself to the God of the Bible. and this nourishes our connection to him, and thus prevents burnout. Of course it's al… Continue

Race Relations !

I wonder if anyone else read the NY times magazine last Sunday.... the article on Obama as the "end of black politics" . I thought it was the best article on race relations, especially B/W race relations and politics, that I've read in years. Being something of a luddite, I read it while holding the paper in my hands after having bought it in the book store. I can't say anything about whether you could find it online.... but I imagine that wouldn't be too hard. I believe the author was Bei. (don… Continue

I'm getting ready to teach a college level course in basic comm devel from a reformed christian perspective. I'd like to know from YOU - what is the one book you think should be required reading? ok - in addition to the Bible, of course.

Duh

I was looking up the word "duh" in the dictionary but I couldn't find it.
My dictionary was too old.
Duh.
Actually, I wanted to use it in talking to myself, especially about a conversation I had with another human being last week. He was rather passionately telling me about the inanities of liberals and the value of realistic capitalists to address the world's problems, especially re poverty and injustice.
I said something like this, "i'm no economist, and I fear to speak about economic or busin… Continue

at the core of this racial/spiritual reconciliation thing is informing people about their true identity...in Christ. At least that's how I perceive it.

Thank you very much for this warm welcome. I regret that only recently did I hear about this important site. God has called me for many years to seek the Kingdom of Justice and Love on this earth, and I have had many amazing opportunities to do so, by God's grace. Certainly, this is not easy. The attacks of the evil one are quite constant on this road of seeking the Kingdom of God on earth, attacks on what is most near and dear to us. The "radical passion" comes in when we react to these attacks in faith, love and care for those who Satan uses. We shatter expectations and completely confound evil. God has given me a number of such opportunities, and the strength to endure, and grow. I often think of Paul and Silas singing in jail after their brutal public beating. I'm sure that God has given many such opportunities to you also over the years, and that you are far more "radical and passionate" than you think. Praise God for the adventure of being God's children on this earth, and seeking the Kingdom of Love and Justice. Blessings,

Wisdom. Oh my. Some does come with age, I'm thankful to say! Or at least I like to think so. I'll be turning 66 in January, and so in December I'll be stepping down from this role I now have.
OK, Now to see if I can make my list to post here within the next few days.... I've always been sort of reflective and analytical, but in my later years a bit more playful too I think. That's grace for sure. Funny, I don't have any specific memory of praying for wisdom in particular. I think if there's one deepest desire of my heart it's closer to a yearning to be a reconciler in all areas of my life.

Well, the HM tie-in that I see is maybe a little more indirect.... like this... in the church plant situations, or in the revitalize the old church situations, where congregations might be interested in learning about a justice issue in the 'hood, such as immigration, poverty, unemploymnet, drugs, or even the cycle of poverty ala Sea to Sea, or learning about the Belhaar confession.... HM regional team people might want to be aware of this good resource.

Not only have I seen Monsma's book - I've touched and even own a copy! I just haven't opened it yet:(
Do you see an HM tie in?

Wonderful. calvinism lives!!
OK, so here's the thing - travel for me has been virtually zero in this position.... only one trip in 3 years. and THIS year is my last year in this position. I'm stepping down by Dec latest. What then? I don't know. I might retire, or I might not.... It all depends on what's available. But it's for sure that this year is my last year inthis role. so travel is highly unlikely .... it's a very busy year.
Also, in February our daughter Sarah who is 37 was diagnosed with acute lymphoid leukemia. So that has made the past few months even more busy. she's been in chemo pretty intensely, and has been dealing with the spiritual and psychological sides of things as well as the physical. She had surgery for obesity (you know that bariatric thing) in Sept, and was recovered nicely from that, but then in January started feeling so tired. so her life has been pretty intense.... and ours too. But I can testify that God is good, and even in this he's been faithful and wonderful.
I just LOVE looking at your family pic.

Karl, as you know, there are always new ways to find out about love, life, God, your family . . . seems like its a constant learning process. I'm pretty much loving what's up in my life right now, so it was not a comment to suggest that things are not good . . . just a reflection on my Calvinist need to be better yet. I wish we could get together to chat. When are you coming to Haiti???????????????????????????

Hi Karl,
I don't think I've met the pastor at Kibbie. We had a Kibbie member serve on the board for We Care I.N.C. last year, but her term expired, and Kibbie is not currently represented (I am currently V.P. of the Board). Would you say Kibbie and their pastor is into social justice? I am thinking about getting some churches to coordinate a South Haven Tents Of Hope event.
