CRC Justice Seekers

Ken Bosveld

Unique guest speaker opportunity - Toronto/Southern Ontario

Dr. Kurt Ver Beek directs Calvin College's Third World Development Studies semester in Honduras, has lived in Central America and been involved with development and justice issues there for over 20 years, has conducted research on the role of faith in development, the effects of Short-Term Missions, and more, and is a board member and co-founder of the Association for a More Just Society, a Christian justice organization that, over the last five years has, among other things, won groundbreaking convictions in cases involving torture of prison inmates and the assassination of human rights lawyer Dionisio Díaz García ; has helped nearly 30,000 poor families obtain land titles; and won 851 child-support cases for single mothers from impoverished neighborhoods. (Kurt and his wife Jo Ann also worked for CRWRC back in the '80s!)

Dr. Ver Beek will be in Hamilton / Toronto area from Thursday, Sept 24 through Sunday the 27th. He will be speaking on the evening of Thurs., Sept. 24 at the Spirit and Sport Christian Celebrity Dinner, hosted in Hamilton by The Carpenteros and Friends. He is also scheduled to speak on Friday, Sept. 26 to students at Redeemer University College and Hamilton District Christian High School.

AVAILABLE FOR SPEAKING OPPORTUNITIES ON SEPT. 26 AND 27

There are still opportunities to arrange for Dr. Ver Beek to speak on Sept. 26 or 27 with Toronto/Hamilton/Niagara/Southern Ontario CRC members and congregations about Christians and social justice in both the global north and south. Now is a particularly interesting time, since Dr. Ver Beek can give an insider, Christian perspective on the recent coup in Honduras.

Abram Huyser Honig
is working from Honduras to help coordinate Dr. Ver Beek's trip, and Ken Bosveld is helping to coordinate from Canada.

If your congregation or social justice group is interested in hosting an event, or arranging to have Dr. Ver Beek speak, please contact either Abram (abram@ajs-us.org) or Ken (kbosveld@cogeco.ca).
