Zimbabwe action

Did you know that the CRCNA Synod ‘08 passed a resolution calling for an end to the violence in Zimbabwe and encouraging solidarity with the people and churches there? There is an exciting opportunity approaching for just that kind of solidarity. Please help spread the news of the crisis in Zimbabwe by planning an event which joins thousands in Africa in speaking out! The Pan-African Day of Solidarity for Zimbabwe will take place this Saturday, July 12, 2008. The activity is co-organized by the… Continue

Food crisis article

Interesting -- and hopeful -- work happening on the food crisis according to the BBC... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/7449989.stm

Wright, Obama, and Black Liberation Theology

Did anyone else catch this on NPR? It's not so often that you hear the word "theology" uttered in main-stream media, so of course the seminary dork in me had her ears perk right up. Have a listen if you like: http://www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?prgId=13&prgDate=03-31-2008&view=storyview What are people in CRC churches saying / thinking about Jeremiah Wright?

Jailed for speaking Spanish? (huh??)

Check out this article (about a judge to ordered that three Spanish-speaking immigrants learn English or go to jail)... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23831149/ ...what do you think of this "out of the box" sentence?? Just? Unjust? More just than some of our current immigration practices?

LENT

I wanted to post, in a public place, my lenten fast (mostly so I won't let myself off the hook too easily): I'm fasting from consumption. I'm going to choose NOT to buy things that I can wait 40 days to buy. Like I want some new blinds for my living room, and a new lens for my camera. And new jeans. And a new snow scraper. And sometimes I find cheap things on the internet that I buy just 'cause they're cheap. I'm going to not do that.

When I want to go shopping, please remind me that I'… Continue

Kate,
Thanks for sending my first comment. I spent most of my life in the Northeast but moved to FL in 2000 when I was tired of shoveling snow and my step-family teens were all in college. The separation helped temporarily and we lived together in FL for several years but now he lives in VA. We are friendly but separated in our own homes. My children are grown and live near me. Now I'll look forward to seeing what your interests are. Ann

awesome! The idea is for you to fill up a table of 8 people (including yourselves) preferably with people who are new to AJS, and make a donation of at least $120 at or before the Celebration to help us cover the basic costs of hosting 8 people at the dinner. Let me know if you have more questions, and THANKS!!!

Hi Kate! Thanks for asking. I'm glad you'll be coming! A few more things you could think about doing:

1. Double-check with meghan that a blurb about the Celebration got published in the OSJHA e-newsletter

2. Make an announcement at your church inviting people to attend

3. Sponsor a table at the Celebration of Justice Dinner: fill up a table of 8 people (including yourselves), preferably people who are new to AJS, to come with you to the dinner, and make a donation of $120 or more to cover AJS's basic costs of hosting them for the evening.

Thanks again, and please let me know if you have any questions. Looking forward to seeing you!

Yeah, I visited two weeks ago and the place was practically deserted ;-) Mark Poppen and I had an awesome conversation for over an hour though and he showed me around. I told him, I can visit for a 'real day', when my school calls a snow day and I get an unexpected day off. :-)

Are you currently a student at Western T.S.? I am STRONGLY considering applying for the MDiv program there. :-)
